Joe to understand the principles of a battery you may need a little primer.
At present we have some 7 different type batteries, some are not rechargeable and some are. If you recall the old dry style batteries that many homes had to ring a bell, once they used up the current in the battery they no longer rang the bell and you would replace them.
Similar to some of the flashlight batteries and hearing aid batteries and some that are inserted in a surgical procedure.
These batteries are for the most part designed for low current draw [what ever the load is]
Now on the other hand if you recall back last year some time we had a similar discussion on the very same topic in regards to the HOT shot Process .
The deep cycle battery is designed to use up its current and yet still be able to recharge it from a full discharge [Most Boats use this type of battery because it takes more current to crank over the motor and is designed to be recharged over and over as well, as it will get drained. especially when the weather is cold.
The battery in our cars are both rechargeable and at the same time can act like the dry cell battery where only the battery is being discharged. Not connected and out of the car ]This was the principal that was used when we hooked up car batteries to operate our live wells outside of the car battery that ran the car. In some cases the battery would be drained of all its current and not operate the pump which was discharging the battery. This is the same principal that is being used by the hot shot method, however because the load is minimal the wire heats up enough to be able to pull it out of the plug. If left to long it will act as a fuse and open.
Many times, to have the discharging battery last longer we would hook two up in a parallel system to allow only for a slow discharge rate as we operated the pumps. Instead of the current being lost from one battery it would be shared by both, thus lasting a little longer. This was similar to what many military applications used as well as the Space Program. The batteries though in those cases are designed for any potential hazards that may occur from over heating or misuse.
Since we are not charging these batteries with the hot shot process and ONLY discharging them we have a remote chance of any type of reaction internal to the battery to be concerned about. The battery is in a static mode or at rest when we make the hook ups.No electrons are being moved. unlike when one puts a charger across the terminal we are inducing more flow of current inside the battery and if the battery heats up to fast we get the liquid to boil and release a mixture of gas that can explode if hit by any kind of a spark
It goes with out saying that what you think you know can be dangerous and it is best to always practice safe procedures. which I have outlined above in prior posts.
So Joe the answer is we are NOT charging the battery in any way with the HOT SHOT method
